Why hydration makes the difference on a football pitch

A footballer loses between 1 and 2 litres of sweat per match depending on conditions — and with that sweat go sodium, potassium, magnesium and chloride. Drinking water alone is not enough to make up for these losses. That is where electrolytes come in.

The Footboks Hydration collection brings together effervescent tablets, isotonic sachets and sports drinks formulated for the specific needs of football: fast absorption, a good electrolyte balance and a pleasant taste without excess sugar. O.R.S. Sport tablets, official supplier of Tottenham, have been among our bestsellers since they were introduced in the box.

Staying well hydrated also helps prevent cramps, maintain concentration and preserve the quality of your ball control right up to the final whistle. See also our article: How to prevent muscle injuries?

Frequently asked questions

Do electrolytes really prevent cramps in football?

Partly. Cramps are mainly neuromuscular in origin, but electrolyte balance contributes to the proper functioning of nerve transmission. Good electrolyte hydration significantly reduces the risk of cramps late in a match, notably by maintaining the sodium and potassium levels needed for muscle contraction.

Which sports drink for a 90-minute football match?

An isotonic drink with 4 to 8 g of carbohydrates per 100 ml and a sodium intake is ideal for a 90-minute match. Electrolyte tablets to dilute in water let you dose precisely according to your sweat rate and the weather conditions. Prepare it before the match and drink it during the warm-up and at half-time.

How long before a match should you start hydrating?

Optimal hydration is prepared in the 24 hours before the match, not just in the hour before kick-off. Start drinking regularly the day before — that is where it really makes the difference. Clear to pale yellow urine is the best indicator of good hydration before effort.
