The three misunderstood mental skills that make Kylian Mbappé the best player in the world
If you don't play at your best every weekend right now, it's because you think you know what mental strength is, when in reality you may not really understand it…
By contrast, Kylian Mbappé is able to play at his best almost every weekend thanks to 3 mental skills, still misunderstood, that he has managed to develop:
- Goal setting
- Self-confidence
- Responsibility
As a former high-potential young prospect at Olympique Lyonnais, now a successful mental coach for professional footballers, I'm going to reveal to you in under 2 minutes the precise reasons why you may have a poor understanding, without even realising it, of these 3 mental skills.
Skill #1: Goal setting
Does Mbappé set his goals the same way you do? NO!
Unlike you, he doesn't set goals in order to achieve them (if your brain starts to buzz after that sentence, it's proof that you can improve mentally). What you don't yet understand is that when you set a goal in order to achieve it, you limit yourself without even realising it… Mbappé, on the other hand, has understood this, and the way he sets his goals lets him, unlike you, progress far more quickly and effectively than 98% of other players. The result: he is the best player in the world today.
Skill #2: Self-confidence
"Mbappé is arrogant", "Mbappé has a big head". WRONG. You just haven't yet understood that there are different levels of self-confidence. Level 100 is certainty. And that's real self-confidence, the kind Mbappé gives off. The kind that bothers people because it is wrongly mistaken for arrogance. It's the kind that lets you stay sure of yourself in all circumstances despite setbacks, outside criticism and inner doubts. In short, it's what you need to reach your full potential. For your part, you may be at level 70 or 80 today… but that's not necessarily optimal.
Skill #3: Responsibility
"It's the coach's fault", "it's my teammates' fault". You've surely said that before, haven't you? By saying that, you externalise failure. You act as if you weren't responsible at all for what happens. Yet you always have a share of responsibility in what happens to you… Mbappé is aware of this. This ability to take responsibility for everything that happens to him is what allows him to keep the constant self-questioning needed to maintain his level of excellence.
If you now genuinely want to play at your best every weekend, like Kylian Mbappé, you need to learn to use these 3 mental skills the right way.
That's possible thanks to the FCJ Method that I developed.
